Thursday, May 11, 6:00pm: Virtual Happy Hour to Discuss Books. This month's selection for the Zoom meeting is "Born in Blackness: Africa, Africans, and the Making of the Modern World, 1471 to the Second World War", by Howard W. French. I proposed this book after reading an intriguing mention of it as a reframing of the story of medieval and emerging Africa - that Europe's "Age of Discovery" wasn't powered by the search for ties with Asia but in pursuit of trade in gold with the legendarily rich Black societies of West Africa. We'll probably also talk about last month's "The Measure: A Novel"and some suggestions for future books - fiction and nonfiction - to read and discuss. Meeting ID: 858 0295 0276, Passcode: happy (Zoom link). If my problem with MeetUp hasn't been solved, RSVPs can to go to Amy Shaughnessy at aesdth@yahoo.com or at 561-352-9245.

Homemade Arancini, Truffle Parmigiana Fries, Fork & Knife Meatballs, Branzino, Chicken Valdastana, Creamy Pesto and Shrimp and more on their mouth-watering menus. RSVP on Meetup or elissa12@bellsouth.net or 561-703-9898 by May 13 at noon. Yes, it's Mother's Day -- bring your mother!

Wednesday, May 24, 5:00 pm: Happy Hour at Grato, 1901 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, 561-404-1334. The Happy Hour at this upscale but casual-elegant Italian restaurant is only 5:00-6:00, but you can stay on for dinner - housemade pasta, wood-fired pizzas, etc., and a full bar. Its roots are in Palm Beach, but it's family style. Ifmy problem with MeetUp hasn't been solved, RSVPs can to go to Amy Shaughnessy at aesdth@yahoo.com or at 561-352-9245.
